Friesland by season: when will you sail?
Spring, summer or autumn: when will you sail in Friesland?
Boating in Friesland: every season is special.
Do you already know when you'd like to go boating? The time of year you choose can make a big difference to your Frisian boating experience. From the lively summer months to the quiet autumn days: every season in Friesland has its own charm. Although the official boating season runs from April to October, each period offers something unique for water lovers.
Spring (April - May)
Spring is a wonderful time to explore Friesland. Nature wakes up and the days get longer. From April the bridge keepers are back at their posts. The marinas open and the special spots get ready for a new boating season.
What are the benefits of boating in spring?
-
Quieter waterways
-
Blossoming nature
-
Pleasant temperatures
and the downsides?
-
A chance of changeable weather
-
Because of the breeding season, some of the smaller channels or footpaths are closed
-
Some facilities are not yet fully open
Spring offers plenty of options for long weekends, perhaps combined with local events. There's lots to do!
-
From 1 April the various boat tours get under way: with Kapitein Rob, the Prinsenvaart in Leeuwarden, nature cruises in the Alde Feanen and by boat to the Kameleondorp.

Also take a look at the website of the VVVhttps://www.friesland.nl, or specifically at Friesland, land of water; here you'll find all the special outings and events.
Summer (June - August)
Summer is the high point of the boating season in Friesland, with countless events and often glorious holiday weather. Many families visit Friesland in the summer. Whole families meet up on the water. Despite the crowds, there are always spots where it's quiet and peace reigns. We're happy to help you with personal advice.

Quiet waterways, plenty of room in the marinas
-
Beautiful autumn colours, stunning nature

Pleasant temperatures

Downsides:
-
Shorter days
-
A chance of rainy weather

City walks in various towns
- Third weekend of September: Agrarian Days in Franeker

Winter (November - March)
In winter our boat owners make sure the boats are made ready for the new season. We enjoy the last of the summer for a little while and prepare for new, and hopefully many returning, guests.
Incidentally, Friesland is beautiful in winter. Enjoy a weekend in a cosy Airbnb, visit lovely museums or go walking in nature. Don't forget to bring your ice skates: you never know what might happen in Friesland!
Weather conditions and boating fun
Whether you love the lively summer atmosphere or the quiet autumn days, Friesland has something for everyone. Bear in mind that popular periods, such as the summer months and public holidays, get booked up quickly. We recommend booking early to avoid disappointment.
The Dutch weather can be unpredictable, but with the right preparation you can enjoy every season. Also take a look at our blog Packing list for the perfect boating holiday in Friesland. That way you'll be prepared for anything.
Whenever you go boating, Friesland welcomes you with open arms and offers an unforgettable experience on the water.
