Packing list for the perfect boating holiday in Friesland

Good preparation starts with a well-thought-out packing list.

Head out on the water well prepared: here's what to bring on your Frisian boating holiday, and what you can leave at home.

A well-prepared boating holiday in Friesland starts with a well-thought-out packing list. Whether you're an experienced skipper or heading out on the water for the first time, the right preparation means a carefree and comfortable trip.

Many of our guests wonder what exactly they need to bring on a boating holiday. What's essential and what's unnecessary? In this blog we'll help you get started with a clear packing list, so you can relax and enjoy the Frisian waters.

Safety first

All boats have insurance for recreational hire, but you'll need to sort out the following yourself:

  • ID card or passport

  • Hire agreement (signed)

  • Insurance documents (cancellation, liability, medical expenses)

  • Cash for bridges and locks

  • Personal medication

What to pack?
Clothing and comfort for all kinds of weather

The Frisian weather can be changeable. It's also often cooler out on the water, especially in the evening. So pack clothes for sunny spells as well as cooler or even rainy moments. Be sure to check the forecast! Bear in mind, too, that a boat doesn't have walk-in wardrobes, just practical storage spaces. So don't bring too much and make life easy for yourself:

  • Warm clothing: long trousers, a warm jumper or cardigan and thick socks

  • A windproof and waterproof jacket, suitable for a passing shower

  • Swimwear and a swimming towel

  • Comfortable shoes with light soles that don't leave marks

  • Sunglasses and a cap or hat

Tip: On many boats you can hire bed linen and towels, which saves you a fair bit of packing.

Food and drink for the first day

In Frisian towns and villages you'll often find a Poiesz Supermarkt. The slightly larger places often have good bakers, butchers and delicatessens where you can buy the tastiest fresh produce and local specialities. As we also recommend spending the odd night out in the wild, on a little island or at an anchorage, it's always wise to have a small stock on board:

  • Supplies for 24 hours: breakfast, lunch and dinner

  • Topped up with a few long-life products if you like

  • Olive oil, pepper and salt

  • Drinking water: You can drink from the tap and fill up with fresh water yourself, but we recommend a few spare bottles)

  • Coffee, tea and other favourite drinks

Good to know: All kitchens are fully equipped with crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils. When you're moored in the marina on shore power, you can use a hand blender or coffee maker, for example. If you're moored in the open countryside, the domestic battery keeps the fridge running nicely and (depending on the type of boat) you can cook a tasty meal on the gas hob.

Packing list for a boating holiday in Friesland:
practical and enjoyable things for on board

Boating is freedom. There's nothing better than playing games outside until late in the evening, sleeping under the stars and spotting birds while you cruise. So don't forget to bring the following practical items:

  • Sun cream and aftersun

  • Mosquito spray

  • Torch

  • Charging cables and possibly a power bank for your electronic devices

  • Books, magazines or an e-reader

  • Games

  • Binoculars

Most boats have the necessary cleaning supplies on board, so you can give the deck a quick mop or sweep out the wheelhouse now and then.

Ready to go

With this packing list you're well prepared for your Frisian boating holiday. All boats come with the basic inventory. Sometimes there's more on board and you'll discover the best family games or a wide selection of teas. You'll see what's possible when you book, and otherwise we'll gladly help you think it through.

Start packing in good time and make a fun preparation of it. That way your holiday begins before you even step on board!
