BOAT HIRE TERHERNE

Boat hire in Terherne

Hiring a boat in Terherne is the easiest way to discover the Sneekermeer and the Frisian lakes from the water. Terherne is known as the Kameleon village and lies like an island between the Sneekermeer and the Terhernster Poelen, completely surrounded by water. All boats in this area are hired for a minimum of three days, so you really have time to sail, moor up and have nowhere to be. You don't need a boating licence. You hire directly from the owner.

What is there to do in Terherne?

Terherne is a lovely watersports village on the Sneekermeer. Here is what you can do:

  • Kameleon Terherne. The Kameleon village is based on the books about the twins Hielke and Sietse Klinkhamer. The village of Lenten has been recreated in the Kameleonboerderij. You can also go on an adventure on Adventure Island and sail on the Kameleon. Especially fun with children.
  • It Paad Werom. A historic village walk where you hear stories from the village's history via QR codes.
  • Café Zevenwouden. A traditional brown café in the heart of the village and one of the oldest cafés in Friesland. It has been going since 1752.
  • Pannenkoekenboerderij De Roos. For pancakes, coffee and cake.
  • 't Schippershuis. Here you can enjoy a really good meal.

Boating from Terherne

Terherne lies on the Sneekermeer, one of the best-known lakes in Friesland. From the village you are out on the lake within 10 minutes. On the other side lie the Terhernster Poelen. From here you can sail to:

  • Sneek: across the Sneekermeer and through the Houkesloot, sailing time approx. 1.5 hours.
  • Grou: a lively and popular watersports village, sailing time approx. 1 hour.
  • Akkrum: a friendly watersports village near the Alde Feanen, sailing time approx. 1 hour.
  • Terkapler Poelen: peaceful water right outside Terherne.

Mooring and overnight stays

Terherne has several marinas in and near the village. You can stay overnight at these places:

  • Gemeentesteiger Terherne. A mooring run by the municipality, which is also on the Friese meren en steden route.
  • Jachthaven Nerushoek. In the heart of the village, on the Terhernster Poelen. There is a visitors' jetty of more than 90 metres, with water and shore power at every berth.
  • Terherne Haven. In the middle of the village on the Nieuwe Zandsloot. Visitors are welcome and moor along the quay. Mooring boats alongside each other is mandatory.
  • Yachtcharter Wetterwille. On the edge of the village, right on the Prinses Margrietkanaal. The visitor berths are in the basin of the marina, with power and water.

Mooring fees are paid per metre per night. For current rates, check the marina's website. Tourist tax may be added.

Which marina suits you best depends on the size of your boat and where you want to go. Not sure? Just give us a call and we'll help you decide.

Practical info

Parking, shopping and bridges

Parking. When you set off, you park your car at the boat owner's premises. This is almost always free.

Groceries. There is a small supermarket in the centre of Terherne. Bear in mind that the fridge on board is often a bit smaller than the one you have at home.

Packing. We have written a blog about what is handy and smart to take with you on holiday.

Lock and bridges. The lock at Terherne is no longer in use, so you can always sail straight through. On the way to Akkrum you will come across movable bridges. Check the bridge opening times before you set off.

Clearance height. There are routes with fixed bridges with a clearance height of 2.40 m, such as the Elfstedenroute. If you want to sail this route, check the boat's clearance height when you book.

Boating experiences from our guests

These guests went before you.

R. van der Pol

“We had a wonderful week on the Ysbrand. And yes, even in less-than-perfect weather it's lovely on this boat and on the water. You're nicely out of the wind, and with a bit of sun it's lovely even at 15 degrees. The boat has every comfort and is incredibly clean. We were welcomed very warmly by Ytsje, and the owners Taco and Wietske are very helpful and easy to reach. A week on the Ysbrand? A great idea!”

Ellen Van Den Bos

“Four of us on the Ysbrand for 2 weeks, camping on the water! You have to juggle the space for your things a bit, Friesland is fantastic, and the Ysbrand's support team is hospitable and helpful! Will we do it again? Maybe, but with fewer people or a slightly bigger boat… You do need some boating experience and to know the rules! We look back fondly on our holiday, the countryside is so beautiful and peaceful, and the towns and villages are busy and fun.”

Gert Jan

“A few days off unexpectedly, and we were able to book through pleasant contact with Taco about the Storskarven. A great boat, lovely to sail on! The welcome, explanation and guidance all went well. The Storskarven is easy to handle, with enough speed on the rivers and canals, but on the big lakes it's a bit short on power. But we enjoyed it!”

Piet Imthorn

“The three of us spent 4 days on the "Ouwe Peer". At 8.5 metres she's not too big, but feels spacious thanks to her lovely layout and has every comfort. She's also wonderfully quiet at cruising speed, 11/12 km/h, and super economical. The weather was lovely, around 21/22 degrees, and we enjoyed Friesland's waterways and the beautiful towns, villages and marinas. We'll definitely be back, and most likely with Piet and Siempie again. Thanks for the fantastic experience.”
